FERPA for Parents

Do I have access to my students' records?

Rights transfer to the student when they reach the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level.

What does that mean to me as a parent?

This means your student's information is kept secure and private from the public.  Everyone, including parents, who wish to see information are required to get permission from the student.

How will I know how my child is doing?

Students can provide access to others by granting proxy access in Doane's self-service.   To give proxy access to others, students will need a good email and birthdate for the person they are granting permission to.

What if my child is in danger?

In case of an emergency, FERPA allows the University to release non-directory information to appropriate parties (such as parents or law enforcement) if the information is necessary to the health or safety of the student or others.

How do I get proof of enrollment for insurance or scholarships?

Doane University provides enrollment verifications that includes Directory Information not deemed confidential.  Enrollment verifications include:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Academic Program
  • Expected date of completion of degree requirements and graduation
  • Full or part time enrollment status
  • Dates of attendance
